Linearization problem/question

I've built a new curve for the R2400, I tried linearizing by measuring
every other step on the 100 step target.  Get banding/steps in a
smooth gradient after doing this.  If I linearize on the 21 step
target things seem ok.  Using a XRite-810.   Can I linearize using
more than 21 steps?
