I use a 2200.  I haven't tested it, but I do not sense any difference  
between Firewire and USB. The overwhelming speed trap is the  
printhead movement itself, not the transfer from computer to printer.

When you installed the Epson driver it should have installed  
everything for USB support as well. (On the Mac, Epson has its own  
additional USB support.)

So with the printer off unplug the Firewire cable and connect a USB  
cable, turn on the 2400, and your computer should perform the niceties.
