If the black to white gradient is not exactly smooth, you will see very 
faint (hopefully) or stronger diagonal streaks (upper left to lower 
right).  You will need to illuminate the ramp well and look carefully 
from directly above to a shallower angle.

Another test is to print out Keith Cooper's excellent B&W test print 
and look at the circular gradient (look for streaky rings) and the 
diagonal wall (look for radial streaks around the upper end of the 
wall).

The advantage to the offset gradient is that you can determine the 
approximate location of the problem (0-100% scale).
