I'm not sure of all the variations of connection possible. It does sound like you ended up with a new IP number so the old one was not found. On my 3800 I've found Bonjour to be the easiest connection method -- assuming you run 10.4 Tiger. Use Printer Setup Utility to setup up Bonjour printer named Quad9600 then run the Install9600 to get all the profiles. USB is simpler but then it's connected to one machine.
