Richard...you are a person I need to speak to. I am planning a new printer and inks etc etc and my head is swimming. I am a former tradtional darkroom person who was used to very very good results. Would you mind of I asked you a few question via your AOL email?
Thanks
Ralph

Has anyone run a systematic comparison on print characteristics using
the Quadtone RIP versus Advanced B&W on the Epson 4800 (or equivalent)?
I know defenders of both but they have not done the work to really
compare them.
I don't think it will work that way.
Comparisons are not validations of print quality, simply because each image
asks for its own expression in print 'quality' or emphasis. I use both QTR and
ABW as well as IP to find the best rendition of a given image. I go further.
I have a 4000 set up with NK7 and another with mix of piezo inks. A third
uses UC and IP. Then there are my 2 4800's (mk and pk), because the paper
factor comes into the picture.
In short, there is no simple comparison of this or that RIP.
About a year ago, a number of us participated in a Print-Off of an image of
Amadou Diallo's choice. We each printed the same image on Han PR as a
'straight print' and then as a free for all, whatever you like print. The RIPS
included IP, ABW, QTR and Studio Print. It was very interesting to see all the
versions up on the wall.
