You might consider the 100% carbon options I've been using on a number of Epson printers.  Eboni-6 < http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf > and the Carbon-6 (user mixed) < http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf > are generic 100% carbon monotone inksets that should work on virtually all Epson printers.  On all I've tested they print with either the Epson driver and an ICC made with QTR Create ICC or, of course, the QTR rip.  I use both approaches.

There is no more stable or affordable way to go if medium warm matte prints are the goal. 

The tones are varied via paper choice.  Page 8 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf has a graph that shows the range of tones -- near neutral to medium warm.
