I use the rear feed of a R1800 all the time. The only time I have problems is when the paper is curled. I flatten the paper, or give it a reversed curl before loading. I have noticed that the glossy paper is worse for curl. I have been reading Paul's, and others, remarks about paper humidity which can cause paper to curl. I keep all my paper in metal storage cabinets, and have been thinking of putting a electrical strip type of heater in the bottom of the cabinets to keep the air dry.
