Need Some Help

2005-09-19 by frearl1

I'm confused about the profiles. I assumed i downloaded everything I
needed (and I probably did), but how can I choose the correct ink
since I don't get any ink selection when i set up Quadtone to print?
I'm sure my problem is that i'm using the wrong profile.

I have additional questions about the profiles:

I just installed QTR 2.2c on Mac OS X v10.4.2. ON the disk image, i
see in /Profiles/InstallScripts a file named "Install-ReadMe.rtf"
which says:

---
QuadToneRIP 2.2 for Mac OS X

This is a set of generic install scripts for each supported printer.
Simply drag the appropriate install script to your own folder with
profiles. Double-clicking on the install script will add the printer
and create and install all the curves in the same folder.
---

There's also /Profiles/1270-UT2 and the "Install1270.command" file.

1) "drag the appropriate install script to your own folder with
profiles" ... What folder is that?

2) double-clicking on the Install1270.command file runs the terminal
and does something, reports success. Where do the profiles this
command is supposed to be installing go?

thanks
Godfrey

Ulp. sorry, hit send too fast.

And thirdly, is there any documentation about how and when to use
which profile, blend curve, etc? I've been experimenting with the
color tone shifts but most of the options seem to produce color which
are very close.

All the Install scripts work on the files that are in the same folder as the
script. For the folders such as /Profiles/1270-UT2 there are a bunch of
profiles for the UT2 inks for the Epson 1270. So an Install1270 script in this
folder will install all the UT2 profiles and setup the Quad1270 printer.

For those making their own profiles, you need to setup a comparable folder
on your own disk. In the folder you will have your profile descriptors that are
all .txt files. You need to copy one of the Install scripts from /Profiles/InstallScripts
based on the kind of the printer you are using. When you run it now in your
own folder you'll setup the appropriate printer and install your profiles.
The profiles go into the system so that the print driver can access them.

As far as printing you should be picking profiles with the right paper or one
similar. The idea is you pick two different hues and then blend them to get the
exact hue that you like. For instance pick a warm and sepia, then blend 60-40
for a medium sepia rather than full sepia. The number of possibilities is huge but
the idea is you can pick a very subtle tone. Once you get what you like you'll
probably save it and reuse it (See Presets in Print dialog).

There's more to read in the Tutorial.pdf

Thanks Roy. That's helpful.

What's not clear to me is 'what is warm tone', 'what is cool tone',
etc, and how the mixes work. I normally use Epson Enhanced Matte (or
Heavyweight Matte, or Archival Matte ... they seem to rename this
paper every other week ;-). I see choices for sepia, neutral and
carbon. I have a test print of a grayscale step wedge, printed 7
times with 7 different mixes of the three so I can see the color
tones, and all but one of them looks virtually identical except for
carbon-1, neutral-1, 85-15 mix. The inverse, neutral-1, carbon-1,
15-85 mix, doesn't look anything like it.

Is there some guide with approximate color swatches that I can work
from? This gets expensive in terms of time and ink consumption. The
tutorial doesn't seem to have anything like that, nor do the various
read-me files. Perhaps on the web somewhere?
