All those newer printers with 9 carts have only 8 channels in the print head. (x900's have 11 carts and 10 channels).
Which black ink you want has to be selected before printing -- it does a mini-flush and re-load if the type changes.
So there's no way you could ever use both blacks on one print.
The only Epson printers that had such a capability were the R1800, R1900 and R2000. They were 8 inks & 8 channels,
and all usable. The one other printer that was unusual was the 4000 which had 8 inks and 8 channels but worked
as a 7 ink printer -- selecting one of the blacks before printing.
