sorry for posting a question that has probably been asked a million times already, but I can't find the answer to it anywhere.
anyway, since most of the manuals for qtr rely heavily on measurements done in measure tool, which will not run anymore on any of my Mac's, what would one use instead of that?

Here are the possible options I know of:
BabelColor PatchTool (PatchReader tool)
pros: patch reading, and lots of other useful color-related stuff
cons: expensive at $125
http://www.babelcolor.com/
X-Rite ColorPort
pros: free
cons: requires generation of target (grid); might be hard to integrate with QTR workflow
info: http://www.xrite.com/colorport-utility-software

Argyll CMS (spotread tool)
pros: free
cons: command-line only, with the usual obtuseness

Argyll has some real potential. I played around with it last year to see if I could get it to generate & read targets for QTR, but got busy with other things.
Which spectro device do you have?

There are some GUIs available for some of Argyll's capabilities, depending on what you want to do. Have a look at <http://www.jpereira.net/roughprofiler> and <http://dispcalgui.hoech.net/>
They don't offer access to all of Argyll's functionality, but it might be of help...
