QTR Newbie Assistance

2014-03-15 by <homershannon@...>

Hello. I'm new to the QTR and trying to get to square one. A little background... I am experienced with printing in black and white and know Paul Roark's procedures for printing UT14 and carbon 6 inks with an Epson 1400, but I have been doing this out of Photoshop using custom .ACVs, and ICCs generated using the QTR create ICC tools. However, I have never used QTR to actually print from.

I've read Tom Moore's instructions but I seem to get lost before I get off the ground. I tried printing a few step scales but the results looked bad and I've not figured out the curve creator yet. Can someone point me in the right direction relative to a few basic setup questions, please?

In the printer model section there are options for Quad 1400, Quad 1400 K6 and Quad 1400 MIS. Quad 1400 MIS was my guess but it did not work well. What is the correct selection for the UT14 ink set?

In the curve creation tool I see the same selections as in the print screen. In Tom Moore's instructions, he recommends starting your process by using an existing file as a starting point. I don't see anywhere in the panel where there is an option to select a profile, only the printer model. What have I missed here?

I looked in QTRs folders and the see the folders with .quad and .qdif files in them, even for the 1400 but not necessarily the 1400-UT14. How do you go about selecting these?

Help is appreciated. Homer Shannon

Hey Homer, hello!

Remember me? You sent me a set of carts for my 1400... maybe I can help you this time. Sorry, I haven't checked this group the last few days, but here's what I found:

Go to:

Program Files>QuadtoneRIP>profiles>1400-mis and you will find a few files for the 1400, they start with Eb14. Some are for Epson Hot Press Natural, the abbreviation is EpsHPn and some are for Premier Art paper, abbreviation is PA325. These are all .qidf files, but QTRip requires .quad files. So you load the .qidf file in the Curve Creator window you've identified and then click "Show Curve". Proceed from there.. and Curve Creator will generate the .quad file and automatically place it in the quad folder.

You enclosed some sample 5x7 prints with those carts, gorgeous b/w by the way. I don't have them in front of me but I think you were using Red River papers. Try the Epson and Premier Art paper, you can't hurt anything by trying those. Then to fine tune it to your paper you'd have to proceed with the help manuals you've described. Yes, here it got confusing for me, too. But if you can generate the .quad files from the .qidf files, that will get you started.

I hope this helps!

Paul
