Purging inks when switching to B&W?

Purging inks when switching to B&W?

2014-12-21 by Nick Payne

I have an old Epson Stylus Pro 3800 (presently running Epson inks) for
which I've purchased some refillable carts and some MIS EB6 carbon inks.
The instructions say flushing is required prior to using the new ink and
carts - what's the recommended method of doing this?

I'd put some generic base -- http://www.inksupply.com/product-details.cfm?pn=PR-C6BBASE-PT&printerID=0 -- in the carts and do a couple of power cleanings with it.

Thanks. So does that mean that I need another set of refillable carts to
take the generic base, or can I partly fill the carts I already have
with the base, perform the flush, and then empty the carts (is that
possible?) before filling them with the actual ink?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't just fill the carts with the EB6
ink, install them, and perform a couple of power cleans to flush the
previous Epson ink from the lines and print heads? I have a pint of each
position EB6 ink, and a spare maintenance cartridge somewhere, so if I
lose 20ml or 40ml from each cart with a couple of power cleans, that's
not really a problem.

If MIS says to flush, it's probably best to do that. At one point, I seem to recall that the Eb6 base (not Eboni MK itself) may have been slightly incompatible with Epson inks. (Avoiding incompatibilities was one reason for the generic base.)

I use the same empty carts. Then empty them and use a little of the Eb6 inks as the final rinse of the cart to minimize the dilution from any residual base in the cart.
