new to QTR in Windows 7 and getting color when printed

2015-11-27 by xebox@...

My first image with QTR.

I am printing on an Epson 1440. My tiff file is saved as 8 bit grayscale, gamma 2.2 with color settings QTR_Gray_Matte_Paper, Perceptual with Black Point Compensation checked.
Since with Windows I cannot print directly from Photoshop I am trying to print this with QTR. I am having only one curve set for K6 - Innova paper and the printing model is Quad1440- K6.

I have tried to print this on 2 different papers and both are printing in color...cobalt blue background with dark orange imagery.

The whole purpose in using QTR is to get a decent BW print from this 1440. I do not have a clue what is going on. Please any thoughts?

Hi xebox,

That you are getting color suggests that you are using the OEM Epson Claria inkset. The -K6 curves are for the Piezography K6 insets only. Delete that installation and instead install the the 1400-1430-CL (Claria) curves. I’m a Mac guy so I’m not sure of the specifics of Windows. Hopefully someone else will help with that.

What inkset are you using?

Thank you Keith. I want to try this and not sure which Claria curve is appropriate since
I am only given Claria-2880-EPGPP and Claria-2880-HFBG-BO for curve choices listed for Quad 1440 print model. Do these seem appropriate/
If not do you have any idea where I can get the correct curve for my 1440 Claria situation

I know that there are quite a few users of that printer here (you mean 1430, not 1440, right?) but I am not one. I only responded because when I saw the mention of K6 and color in your original post I knew that you had installed the profiles for the K6 grayscale inset but are actually using a color inkjet.

I looked at the contents of the CL profile folder, though, and I see what you mean. I don’t know why there are only those 2 profiles provided. Hopefully someone else will respond to that. Or maybe someone who has made profiles for this inkset will offer to share. What I can say from the profile names is that EPGPP is for an Epson Glossy paper and that HFBG-BO is for something from either Harmon or Hahnemuhle using Black Only.

I’m sure someone else here with direct experience with the 1430 and Claria inks will chime in eventually. Don’t give up.

Back at a computer -- my main info URL is: http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/ .

The URL for the Claria printing is:

The profiles are at:

While I concentrated on the Red River metallic paper, most glossy papers have very similar coatings and will take profiles with little, if any, changes.

Near the bottom of the page at www.paulroark.com/BW-info there is a link to a PDF regarding printing B&W with the OEM color dyes. It links to some profiles.

Thank you for the profiles. I placed them in the Quad1400 folder for QuadToneRIP, but they are not showing in the drop down list in QTR when I try to print. I also put them in the Profiles folder...just in case. Reopened several times. Still not showing.
Any suggestions?

You have to go to the install script for your printer and install it before the profiles with show up.

Usually we put the qidf files in the appropriate "Profiles" folder, open them with the Curve Creator, and save them. That also generates and saves the quad file to the appropriate "QuadTone" folder.

In Win 7, the OS doesn't like to have new files saved under \Program Files. The folders are usually in this path:

"C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP"

I put a shortcut on my Desktop to this location. Under this there are folders for "Profiles" (the qidf files) and "QuadTone" (the quad files that the rip actually uses).

You might make a shortcut to this location (with you user name in there) and then use it to see if the appropriate folders are there. If not, you might want to make them and the individual printer folders under those, with the files in them. You may have to open the qidf files and save them to have the system see them.

This is the full path to my 1400 Claria profiles:
C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP\Profiles\1400-cl
