Looking for moderation help again

Looking for moderation help again

2016-04-07 by Tom Moore

The quadtoneRIP Yahoo group has been remarkably free of spam for over 10 years. Although Yahoo has spam filters, they are not perfect by any means. You can thank your dedicated moderators Tom Husband and Phil Morris for their efforts in preventing spam for most of those 10 years.

Phil has retired and Tom is heading in that direction soon, so I'm looking for some more help moderating the list. This not a big task and does not take much time. The reason I need help is that I'm not always available to deal with messages requiring moderation when I'm away. Then they can languish in the moderation queue for 24 hours or even days. That's not very welcoming to new members - the ones being moderated.

The reason new members are moderated is to gain some confidence that they are not spammers trying to join the list. After a few legitimate messages over a week or so, the new members are taken off moderate status (by me). This has proven to be the most effective way to keep spammers off the list. Since we started this scheme, the list has been completely free of spam.

So to repeat - I';m looking for a couple of volunteers to help with moderation - specifically reviewing and approving messages from new members under moderation. I'm NOT looking for people to put out flame wars (we don't seem to have those), deal with banning members or any of the other less pleasant tasks. The task takes a couple of minutes a day (or even less) and it can be done with your email client or a web browser.

If you're interested in helping out (or want to find out more about the requirement) contact me off list at the email address above or at the list owner's email address below:

If you've benefited from Roy's work and this list, then this is a small way of giving something back to the community.

Looking for moderation help again

Moderation is the lubricant that keeps this mail list running smoothly. We are once again, down to one moderator in addition to myself. The list runs quite smoothly with three moderators. Less than that and posts from moderated list members (typically new members) can wait for moderators attention for hours or even days if both moderators are away from their normal work routine at the same time. Three moderators makes that less likely.

So, once again, I am looking for volunteers to help with list moderation. The work is easy and demands little time. The compensation is the satisfaction of helping a community of photography enthusiasts help and learn from each other.
