As I understood the instructions from setting up my 1430, plugging in the USB makes the wireless set-up easier. After it's set up, you can disconnect the USB, and the wireless then works fine.
With my Epson 1500w which is the UK version of the 1430, I have never connected it with a USB cable, wireless setup and QTR over wireless have been fine with several desktop PC and laptops. .
