Print viewing/Solux alternatives?

Print viewing/Solux alternatives?

2019-04-15 by per@...

I am wanting to set up an area next to my calibrated monitor to view prints in to tune my softproofs, and some research seems to indicate that solux MR16 lamps is what people used to use. However, it seems virtually impossible to find a desk or floor lamp for MR16 bulbs nowadays. I don't have the budget to buy a viewing booth, so this leaves me kind of stumped. What are people doing? I want to do something that gets me 80-90% of the way to optimum without spending a ton of money.

One thing my internet research has dug up is these CRI 95 bulbs: https://store.waveformlighting.com/products/filmgrade-flicker-free-a19-led-bulb but CRI of course is not the be-all-end-all. Has anyone tried this? They are obviously discontinous spectrum lights to some degree.

Any tips? What are people doing?

The should work well. Their lighting is very accurate.

I assume you will get the 6500K version and have your monitor calibrated to D65?

Great! Do you use a task lamp with it or have you built some kind of viewing booth? What is "good enough" for you? Ideally I would love a viewing booth of some sort, maybe something hacked together, but I can't justify the cost of something off the shelf......

FWIW: I use an OttLite 5000K ("natural daylight") folding lamp next to
my monitor ($30 at Amazon). I will make a small print, e.g. 6x9 or 8x10
and look at it under the lamp to see if I'm on the right track. If so,
I'll put the print back to dry and save the file with whatever layers I
used for soft proofing. If it still looks OK after a day or so, I can
make a larger print if desired. I understand this would be laughable
for a pro, but it seems to give a good match under most display
conditions. The print, viewed with the OttLite, is an excellent match
side by side with the monitor image (Dell graphic monitor with Colorbyte
calibration).

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
