Separation negatives for processes where you can expose multiple times

Separation negatives for processes where you can expose multiple times

2019-09-11 by per@...

I know that there are people that make several negatives from a single positive by photoshop magic, and then printing these negatives with different exposure times and QTR curves on a single sheet of paper using processes where you can recoat a paper and expose it multiple times.

Could someone explain the theory and practice of doing this. and what it achieves (or point me to an explanation?). I could see you getting deeper dmax like how Irving Penn did by printing multiple negatives for platinum. I could also see a potential to get nicer transitions by tones by optimizing the printing of a negative for each tonal range. How would one build a flow for doing this in QTR?
