Epson ultra tones

2005-12-18 by jnhugo

I have not been following the "lists" for sometime now so just a basic QTR question-is this
to be used with the original color inks for the 2200 to produce neutral black and white
prints? I have mucho epson color carts for the 2200-

Yes

(you can also use QTR with some other inksets on the 2200 as well)

Some of us find we get better results replacing the Epson Black with the MIS
ebony black for matte printing (a slightly cooler black - epsons is very
warm - and also generally seems to give a slightly better dmax with most
papers)

I prefer to use papers with no optical brighteners if I can. I find this
helps with avoided a slightly annoying magenta metamerism under some mixed
lighting.

Thanks for the reply- earlier this year when a new type of cis killed my 1280 i kind of gave
up printing but now have access to a large supply of ink for the 2200- i thought it might
be worth it to buy a printer to use it in- of course i am interested in "black and white" but
would be good to print color as well- for a while I was very happy with MIS ut2 in the
1280-but got kind of disgusted after the 1280 died-

Are you now wanting to use the ink that may have killed your 1280 in a
2200? (death probably came from ink itself)

Yes, Epson pigments make anything you want tone-wise using QTR.
Epson's black is warm so if you want neutral or cold it'll add cyan to
get there...beautiful. If you want warmer it'll add yellow &
magenta...eg selenium, brown, or sepia tone. easy.

think it was the inking system that killed the printer-not the inks!

I know how third party inks can kill (clog) printer heads...but I
don't know how CIS systems can do it. Can they really do that?

yeah if they lose suction you get a syphon affect that drains the
head and leaves it prone to drying out and clogging
jack
p.s. you're kind of a skeptical dude-yes?

I've had more than one 1280 die on me when using CIS systems. One problem is after a time the inks form a sludge in the bottom of the ink bottles. When the printer sucks up the ink, the tube is at the bottom of the ink bottle and may be sucking the sludge into the heads. I think this is why more than one of my 1280s died with unfixable head clogs. So pay attention to the expiration date of the ink if there is one. Also, don't dump the fresh ink into the partially full older container. This just adds the new ink to the old sludge. Instead, toss the old container and replace it with the new one. One place, MIS I think, sold a liquid you put in the ink to reduce this problem. I don't know how well it works and if it works with all inks.
