QTR-Quadtone RIP

I have used a number of the B+W "solutions" and have found them 
wanting.  Part of this may well be ignorance/incompetence on my part.

I am now contemplating jumping into the matter again with an Epson 
2400 with the Photoblack ink for use with a semigloss paper (I use 
Epson Premium Semimatte for color on my 4000 with Media Street 
Ultrachrome and get great results).

I want the punch and Dmax afforded by the Pk ink.

I have used another 4000 with MIS and Sundance Septone with 
disappointing results on matte paper.

My questions:

What paper choices do I have.  Will I have to make custom curves for 
most papers?  I read somewhere that QuadRIP only supports Epson 
Enhanced Matte and Ilford Lustre with "canned" profiles.  Is this 
true?  How big a deal is profiling the paper/printer combination?

Do you think the combination of 2400 and a semi-gloss paper is a 
good idea.

Any other thoughts, please.

The 2400 on a semi gloss paper will work just fine. The "advanced 
black and white", or ABW option in the Epson printer driver will give 
you excellent result that you may decide that QTR is not necessary. I 
would start with the Epson driver. The Epson Semi Gloss paper will 
give you a Dmax in the 2.4 range. The new, soon to be released Museo 
Silver Rag is very nice with R2400 PK ink.

But then again, if you want the ultimate control, you can use QTR 
also.
