routine "ink limit" & "gamma adjustment" ?

Routine tinkering with Ink Limit and Gamma Adjustment sliders can be very rewarding: print a test print, make increasingly informed guesses about those adjustments. Some images want heavy inking, others want light... Does anybody else do that? I never see it discussed. Relates directly to lithography, ie ink loading and plugging. Do the numbers attached to those sliders actually quantify something?
