QTR Newbie Questions

QTR Newbie Questions

2005-05-04 by Scott McLoughlin

I just installed QTR. My plan is to use the Epson inks (or maybe
MIS black?), but otherwise have a dual purpose color/b&w printer.

I have a few really basic questions.

-1- I've been using the C86 and MIS EZ inks on EEM. How should
QTR results (with Epson UC inks and EEM) compare (generally speaking)
with what I've been getting. In other words, as I tweak, what should I be
looking for? Any known glaring differences I just should expect and
shouldn't worry about.

-2- I use PWP (PictureWindow Pro), not PS. Should I just save a
grayscale to a TIFF and use QTR GUI to print? Are there other options
using PWP?

-3- I stupidly installed the Epson Photo Black. I bought the Matte
Black. I use windows XP, but having read of Mac issues swapping
the inks, is there anything I have to worry about using XP? Also,
can I save the Photo Black cartridge, and if so, should I do anything
to preserve it (baggie, skotch tape, etc.?)

-4- With the MIS EZ system, I use M-W, Y-W, C-N to get a mostly
warmish image. Is there some curve combination (if I have that lingo
right) that I can use to get approximatley the same tonality?

Very impressed with QTR's setup and what not. I'm also impressed
with the level of expertise I've seen on this list and on DBWTP, but
I'm hoping to get some decent results without too much teeth pulling :-)

Thanks much.

Hi Scott. Using the Warm curve in QTR and the Epson Ultrachrome inks ...
I get prints that are very difficult to distinguish from the C86 and MIS
UT EZW (warm). If I don't have them side by side, I would be able to say
which print came from what.

I just save TIFF:s and print them in QTR (using QTRGui). I think Mac
users have it a lot more integrated into the system.

Paul Roark usually says you should tape over the outlet to make sure it
doesn't dry up.

The warm curve and Epson Enhanced Matte will probably give you results
that are indistinguishable (but you can print larger).

I'm no expert, but that's been my experience.
