Linearization - how many grey steps? 21, 55, 100? or maybe 21x4?

2006-10-01 by mattchapin2

Hello,

I have a question about linearization.

The user guide and QTRGui help tell me to print the file 21step.tif,
which linearizes using 21 different grey value measurements.

However, in the version of QuadtoneRip I have (2.4.2 for Windows),
there are 55 spaces in the "Linearize" tab -- 5 rows of 11.

Furthermore, I have seen references to a 100-step wedge
(100stepwedge.tif, found in the QuadtoneRIP program folder), and I
have even heard somewhere about the ability to measure the 21-step
wedge 4 times and input all 4 measurements, which the software
averages for a more accurate read.

Which target should I print, and how should I enter the measurements
into the 55 blanks I see?

I am a bit confused.

Thanks for your help!

Matt

Use the 21step target and just fill up the first 21 spaces. More steps may
or may not work. My experiments with more steps were very unsuccessful, with
bad posterization in the resulting profiles. I've heard others experience
the same, so more is certainly not always better.

Thanks David!

May I ask, did you achieve your success using 21 steps with a
scanner, or a densitometer?

I don't have a densitometer myself, but among my photographer
friends in NYC I bet I can find someone who has one if I need it!

Thanks!
Matt

I'm using an X-Rite 810 densitometer. I will probably upgrade to PrintFix
Pro at some point. I tried using a scanner before, and the results weren't
bad on matte papers. On glossy my scanner was very inaccurate in the deep
shadows - It couldn't differentiate between the values in the 80-100% range
which made it useless for linearization. I like the peace of mind knowing
I'm using accurate equipment, so I decided to buy the densitometer.

[QuadtoneRIP] Installation problem QTR-OS X

2006-10-02 by Hans & Chia

Hello,

I have some strange problems when installing/removing QTR 2.4.2 on a
Mac PPC G5 dual core OS X 10.4.7.
Any advice to solve them are welcome.

Here is the story:
First I installed QTR on a G4 OS X 10.3.9 and everything seemed to
work as it should, profiles etc.
However, I had to move the printer to the G5 before I could evaluate
QTR.
The G4 and the G5 are on the same network.
Installed QTR and the profiles on the G5, printer connected and
switched on.
But the profiles didn't show up, I have confirmed that they are at
the right place.
Decided to remove and reinstall but the Remover doesn't work it keeps
saying "can't continue because there is nothing to install".
Neither the Installer or the Remover ask for Admin.
At one time I added the shared quadprinter from the G4 but removed it.
After that "quadtone rip" wan't dissapear from the drop down menu in
the Print dialog box.
I have tried, several times with removing and adding printer in the
Print Center, restarting, restore disk permissions, disconnect the G5
from the network, moved all xxxxxprinter.plist from the user/prefs
folder. I have also tried to use US English as system language, helps
sometimes with other problems.
Every time I add the printer I get two "quadtone rip" in the drop
down menu and the profiles never show up.

Any ideas what to do?
How do I get rid of the second "quadtone rip" and how do I find the
profiles?

Best and TIA
Hans

The fact that you are getting the 2nd QTR pulldown indicates that
the install of the profiles didn't work. You should always
add the printer (such as Quad2200) using the Install2200 script.
If you just use Printer Setup Utility you get the symptoms that
you mention -- not only do the profile files have to be in the
correct place they must be put into the internal table (the ppd
file).

Hi and thanks Roy,

My Os Xs must be wierd!
I can't print with QTR at all and PS CS2 crashes.
Directly after installing QTR I used the profile install script in
the same folder as the profiles.
I get the curves in the G4 (10.3.9) but not in the G5. When you
compare the locations of the QTR files on the both HDs it looks the
same.
When adding the Quad9800 in the Printer Setup Utility (Tiger) it
first recognize the Epson SP 9800.
Then I select Quadtone Rip in the "print with"-pulldown menu and then
QTR 2.4-Epson9800. Change the name to Quad9800. Something wrong here?
Using the add-more-printers-advanced option doesn't help.

When I try to print from the G4 with a curve or from the G5 (QTR
Calibrate) all LEDs starts to blink on the printer and on the display
you can read there is a mismatch error between media selected and
cartridge installed. I select matte paper as I use matte black. The
Epson driver works normal.
PS has crashed twice in the G5. PS can't create a new document or
open a PS-file due to "software error". You have to reinstall PS.
How can I remove QTR? The Remover doesn't work it keeps saying "there
is nothing to install".

However, I'm really curios how QTR works so any help are welcome.
