Just a beginning question, but can I run quadtone rip on windows XP 
machine connected to epson 4000 through firewire?

I see no reason why not.  My 2100 works perfectly from QTR on XP via either.

I seem to recall that when I bought my 4000 (summer 2005) this was a 
hot topic either on this or the yahoo 4000 group board and the answer 
was that for the 4000 firewire wouldn't work and you had to use the USB 
connection if you run windows XP.

Should be able to. QuadtoneRIP uses the Windows drivers, just in "Raw" mode.
