The difference between preset curves

Does anyone know what is the difference between the preset curves in the Quadtone rip? I make large portrait prints on canvas. When I use enhanced matt curves I get bad posterisation in tonal graduations from midtones to shadows. However choosing the photorag curves seems to minimise this. Can anyone shed any light on the reason why?
