The 1400 is probably the one I will get....
Any help would be appreciated,

well FINALLY something I know about so I can answer this guys question.
I just started using the Epson `1800 and you can keep your color carts in while using the 3 black inks. They go in the MK< PK and Gloss Optimizer and your color carts stay where they are. . But you can only print on matte paper for your color. There is a workaround to print on luster paper for color that was answered for me this week but I have to re-read it and understand it. Just go back a few days and look for the answer to...printing BW on luster paper, or something like that.
I just bought the Epson 1400 but do'nt know about the inks as I never used it yet nor do I have intention of using it for black only printing.
But what I can tell you is that the R1800 makes beautiful BW prints using the QTR and those three black eboni inks. I printed the 100 step test sheet and there was definition in all the steps except maybe in 99-100. The 1.5 picloliter droplet is perfect for BW and the smooth gradation of tones is just excellent.
Hope this helps. Now back to my usual mode...asking and learning. LOL>
