PLEASE, PLEASE Help with Calibration

PLEASE, PLEASE Help with Calibration

2008-02-20 by cteditions

I understand my last post might have been too long for anyone to reply to my inquiry as a
new user and maybe I simply was not clear. I have looked over and over the literature
AND through the posts and still cannot find clear answers to some questions. I really
would like to start printing so if anyone could PLEASE PLEASE answer the following
questions, or just some of them, I would VERY much appreciate it. I use a Mac G5 running
OSX 10.5.2 and an Epson R2400 printer using the UC inksÂ…

1. Is the "Calibration" very first thing I need to do and after this do I Linearize the file?

2. When Calibrating and printing the Ink Separation Page what PROFILE do I choose in the
PREVIEW box?

3. When starting out with an Ink Descriptor File why should I choose a file from inside the
"Example Files" folder when there are more files specific to my printer/paper in the
"Profiles" folder (R2400-UC folder)? They seem to be the same kind of file with the same
informationÂ….

4. Will this Calibration Process create a PROFILE or a CURVE? In other words, will I always
choose the Generic Profile such as QTR-Gray, QTR-Matte or QTR-Lab for Profile and use
what I create in Calibration Mode in the Curve Dialog????

5. The Ink Descriptor Files all have only K and LK, but my printer also uses LLK. The
number of inks must be set to 4, 6 or 7 BUT my printer has 8 AND the Ink Separation Test
image has 8 with LLK. So, what # of inks do I use and how do I designate the LLK?

6. Each time I go through a particular procedure, such as printing and placing Ink Limit
value, do I drop my Ink Descriptor File into Drop-Quad-Profile so that it overwrites itself
with the updated values? And, since I am dropping into Drop-Quad-Profile does this
mean that I choose my custom file under PROFILE in Print Preview OR do I choose it as my
first curve????

If you like, please e-mail me directly at cteditions@...

Much appreciation in advance,

Cody Thomas

I uploaded a file (QTR Profiling 10.5.2) to the files section in the documents folder.
It describes the process I used to build a profile for a 2200. I think that all the steps are
valid. I know the profile makes nice prints, with subtle differences between on that uses
the QTR Gray PK ICC for Photoshop and one where the image profile was converted in PS
to the ICC I made as part of the process. (The print made with the image profile set to QTR
Gray PK is just a bid darker in the mid-tones.

Hope this helps.
