Photograph Exchange

2008-04-16 by p_bien

Anyone interested in participating in a photo exchange? I'm thinking
of something simple and easy to easy to manage. I know some folks make
money (or their living) in selling their photographs. I'm not looking
for freebies from the pros (although I'd love to have you participate
as well). I was thinking of the amateur folks who enjoy creating their
own work and collecting works of others. We could limit paper sizes to
something reasonable (8.5X11 or 11x14) and send a single favorite image
in exchange for same from others. I finally have my printing going
well with Eboni matt-black-only using an Epson R1800/3MK/QTR system
with fine papers.
Let me know of any interest and I'll create a mailing list.

Thanks

Interesting idea Paul. I have a few thoughts and see
several obstacles implementing it: Who gets what
print? If we all send prints to one location then who
distributes them and how does he get compensated for
doing so? (Maybe we send in our print plus 10 bucks to
cover shipping out to the recipient...I wouldn't be
against this)

How do we know what's available? (Someone would have
to create a website to display the available
prints...or could JPGs be displayed in the Files
area?)

On another note, I'm very interested to see you're
using the same printer/ink combination that I am.
I've created a few curves for the papers I like to
use, and if you or anyone else who uses R1800/3MK has
created their own curves then I'd be very interested
in swapping them. I suppose this would simply mean
making a greater effort to uploading the curves to the
files section.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Photograph Exchange

2008-04-16 by Brentley Beerline

There is already a yahoo group that does black and white print exchanges.

I used to be a member but have been focused on other things recently.

It worked like this.

a theme was sent out
14 people or so would respond, 12 members and 2 alternates.

the participants would print up the proper number of images.
They would mail them in a fed ex box to a central location (the guy that ran the print exchange)
In the fedex box would be another fedex box with a preconfigured return way bill.
once all the photos were in, they would be distributed to the members via fedex.

It was a cool thing to participate in.

Brentley

Ken
I was thinking in simpler terms. I send you a print of my choosing,
you send me a print of your choosing. If you don't like the print at
the most you are out $10 dollars worth of ink, paper, and shipping.
On the other hand, you might end up with a print you really enjoy.
I'm not asking people to give up prints they can sell on Ebay for 100-
200 dollars.

What papers are you using as I would be interested in any curves
you've created. I want to standardize on 2 or 3 papers at the most.
So far I like H. Photo Rag, E. Fine Art Velvet, and H. Matt Baryta

Hi Paul,

Brentley (message just before yours) mentions a
trading network that sounds pretty workable. If we
can't find it, then starting one up using the same
model might be a good idea.

I just got my setup going a week or so ago (Thank you
Paul Roark!). At the moment I've created curves for
Hahn Photo Rag and Epson Matte Heavyweight, which
works nicely on Epson's Premium Presentation Matte.

It would be interesting to try your Photo Rag curve
just to see what differences ther are. Presumably, if
there differences it would be due to differences in
the printers.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Photograph Exchange

2008-04-16 by Howard Shaw

I am the current organiser of the UK B & W Print Exchange and we are
just embarking on our 19th Exchange. We would welcome a few more members
from the UK or Europe. You can read more about the exchange on the yahoo
site:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/UK_BW_PrintExchange/

The exchanges are A4 prints (although we have done A3 in the past) and
all members send their prints to me alongwith a small fee for postage.
Numbers are generally 5-10. I then post out the different contributions
to each member.

Feedback and discussion are regarded as an essential part of the exchange.

Please email me off list if you are interested in joining.

regards
Howard

Re: Photograph Exchange

2008-04-18 by Nancy Wilson

I belong to such an online group:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBW-PrintExchanges/

We exchange every quarter. There are fourteen people who contribute
and the list varies somewhat from quarter to quarter. Right now,
the moderator is getting ready to mail the 1st Qtr 2008. There are
contributors from the US and several foreign countries. The
contributors vary from good/very good to some very nice fine art
printers. Others are very welcome to join as the moderator has some
difficulty from time to time filling the 14 slots plus 3
alternates. I have been doing this for one year, and I am getting a
very nice collection of Black and White prints and learning a ton
about B&W printing.

To participate, you must notify the moderator that you want to join
for the quarter, send in 14 copies of your prints by the due date
with a separate description of the print (how it was taken and
printed, the paper, inks, printer, etc. and then receive back 14 new
copies of prints. There is some voluntary feedback on line
afterwards.
