Problem resetting cartridges for Epson 2200

Problem resetting cartridges for Epson 2200

2008-09-25 by Tom Moore

Short form:
I'm having trouble getting reset MIS (or even Epson) carts to be recognized
as full. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?

More detail:
It's been a while since I've had to refill cartridges (I have a number of
sets). Recently I refilled a number of sets and am trying to use them. I'm
having trouble getting the printer to recognize the refilled cartridge. The
symptoms are:

1. most often the printer thinks the cartridge is empty, even though I have
reset it (using the MIS SK168 resetter)
2. occasionally after a number of tries a cart will be recognized as full
3. I have tried replacing MIS chips with Epson chips from old empty carts
(and reset), that works occasionally, but similarly infrequently to MIS
chips
4. when a cartridge is reset, the printer sometimes seems to detect that it
is not an Epson cart and gives me a warning (that I can dismiss and proceed
with printing)

I have tried repeated resets, cleaning contacts on the cart and attempted to
clean contacts on the printer head (hard to get at).

Is the resetter the problem, or the printer? Given that it happens on so
many carts, I don't think they're all bad.

I've tried calling MIS tech support and had to leave a message. So far no
response.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Re-setters are so cheap, I'd start with buying a new one. I've gone through
several (never had exactly the symptoms you describe, however).

You may have already tried this; Sometimes my auto-reset chips get cranky and I have to turn off the printer... pull the USB cable and unplug the printer, well...Let it sit for a few minutes...Then plug the printer, turn it on and connect the USB. It has worked for me in similar, but not so lengthly, situations.

Have you tried using the SSC Utility to reset the chips. It works
well for me. It can be downloaded at
