New to QTR and some questions

2009-03-26 by arhodes19044

Hello, I am new to quad tone printing. I have done a fair amount of color printing. I have an Epson R1800 and I will be using the MIS "black only" inks. I have ordered them, and I am waiting for them to arrive.

I wanted to try out QTR and see how to make it work.

I have 2 questions. When I set it up for the R1800 printer, and the R1800-3MK, and the 3MK Premier Art Smooth paper (actually I just have the regular inks in the machine, and just a plain piece of paper), I get an error saying: "Image ToRaster encountered a problem". I tried using "Debug" enabled, and I got no info in the debug windows. What am I doing wrong?

The picture is getting printed and it looks OK considering that only 1 of the 3 locations has the black ink.

Another question: If I am printing with 3 identical inks (they are identical, right?) then why do I need 3 of them, and not just 1? If 3 are better than 1, why not 4?

Hi Tony,

The 3MK setup was done by Paul Roark if you need more detail. The reason for
3 blacks is to cut down on banding. With just one black the printer
is more prone
to that problem -- with 3 you get a little more randomness which helps fix it.

The regular Epson inks have 2 blacks and a clear gloss in those slots so you are
probably getting about 2/3 of what you'll get with MIS ink. (it's
also more neutral color).

You shouldn't be getting a imagetoraster error. But if you get the
whole print it must
be in exiting that program. If you continue to get this let me know.

Roy,

Ahh, now I see. That makes sense.

I will try to reproduce the error again. I am running an I7 with XP Pro, and the R1800 (as well as an old laserjet and an R800). I stopped getting the error when I set the paper size to one of the standard sizes rather than the custom size of 8.5"x11". I will try it again and see if I get the error again when I keep everything the same except for the custom size. I will let you know how it works.

I must say that I am impressed with the whole thing. I also tried using the R1800 (non-3MK) setting where it will only use the one MK channel. It worked quit well. The ink did not adhere well to the 4x6 glossy paper I was using. I suppose that GLOP is required on top? Maybe I will try to do a profile for using the photo black instead of the matte black ink. I want to try out making my own profiles and this will be an interesting test while I wait for the shipment of the 3MK materials to arrive from MIS.

I see that error occasionally as well; it's intermittent and I haven't been able to consistently associate it with anything else. Get good prints, though.

Hi Roy,

I get that same error randomly. It usually say something like "Memory
can't be read at location xxxxxxxx" Clicking on the OK button closes the
error window, and presumably the Imagetoraster program, but my prints
always finish properly. I am running a Win2000 on an Athlon 64 X2 with 1G
of memory. There doesn't seem to be any pattern in when or under what
circumstances the error occurs.
