Abrupt out of focus transitions causing double image

2010-06-25 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I have just noticed that with QTR I am seeing a strange appearance in prints with abrupt, but out of focus tone transitions - as in the image on the page I've linked to below. It looks like QTR is trying to sharpen the image and is losing the smoothness of the transition, resulting in a double image. It's not happening with Advanced Black and White.

I'm using Ultrachromes on a 3800/Ordered Dither algorithm/1440 Super/Unidirectional; but have also tried 1440, and Adaptive Hyprid as well as Hybrind Floyd-Steinberg. Same result.

I've uploaded the images, a crop of the original, and 1600ppi scans, to this page:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (I've also asked the Digital BW group, but got no response yet.)

thanks,
Richard
