Using Windows 7 Pro. Using QTR 2.7 Is there a way to "convert" a QUAD file to a QIDF file so I can edit the "text file" and modify the curve? I hope to modify an existing "almost right" curve to suit my needs, but I have only the QUAD from which to begin. Any help appreciated! Will Clark

Will, The QUAD file is the one you want to edit. It is the file that contains that actual curve data. Mike On 30 August 2010 22:33, Will <bill.clark@...> wrote: > > > Using Windows 7 Pro. I too have the same question. I use QTR on a PC which has the Curve Creation which allows viewing and changes to QIDF files to create new profiles and creates the QUAD file (as I understand it) So, I have some QUAD files that I would like to see in the Curve Creation. I tried opening the QUAD files with Notepad, Wordpad, etc and it is just a bunch of meaniless numbers not organized like the QIDF Text Files which I understand. Any help appreciated. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Michael King <drmrking@...> wrote:

Terry, >>So, I have some QUAD files that I would like to see in the Curve Creation. I tried opening the QUAD files with Notepad, Wordpad, etc and it is just a bunch of meaniless numbers not organized like the QIDF Text Files which I understand. You can't create a QIDF from a QUAD. But the Quad files are far from meaningless numbers, they actually describe in detail the ink curves. You can load them into excel and graph /edit them. What do you want to actually do with these quad files? Mike, Thanks for the the response. I assume you understand the PC Curve Creation feature in QTR for Windows that allows one to easily view the ink curves and easily modify an exsisting ink profile. It is very easy compared to what the Mac people need to do with the QIDF text file IMHO. I downloaded some ink files from the forum (QUAD only) that look like they would be close for another paper use...and I want to view and "engineer" the ink settings before printing with QTR. Thanks again, Terry --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Michael King <drmrking@...> wrote:

Terry, So you can manipulate quad file values directly in excel or another spreadsheet (Opencalc for example). This actually gives you greater control than you get with a QIDF file as you control the ink curve data directly rather than through the QIDF descriptor. I do this to linearize QUAD files for different papers. If you just want to view the curves you can do that in QTR print app by selecting the quad file as though you were going to print with it and then right click on it to display its ink curve graph. Mike, Very interesting. I was not aware of the "right click" and I was able to view the curve. I also opened the QUAD file in Excel and this showed two columns and 2058 rows. This profile was for a R800 / R1800 ink profile and four of the "active" inks there were values in that section and in the other 2 inks section all zeros. Is there some write-up or info sheet somewhere on how to manipulate the numbers to change the ink curves in these files? Terry, > Is there some write-up or info sheet somewhere on how to manipulate the > numbers to change the ink curves in these files? > There is no write up - but it's really simple. Each ink channel is a list of 256 values one for each 8 bit Gray value (0 -255). Each of these values represents the amount of ink that is put down from that channel for a given Gray value. The ink values are 16 bit i.e. the max value is 65536 = 100 on the graph. That's it - really really simple. Change the ink value for a given Gray value and the RIP puts a more (or less) ink from that channel for that Gray value Mike > > > --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com <QuadtoneRIP%40yahoogroups.com>, > Michael King <drmrking@...> wrote: > > > > Terry, > > > > So you can manipulate quad file values directly in excel or another > > spreadsheet (Opencalc for example).
