Printing Ink Separation Page

Printing Ink Separation Page

2010-09-01 by Allan

My setup is a 2008-generation iMac running OSX 10.6.4 with a networked Epson 3880. The Mac also has a Parallels VM with Win7. I have the latest Epson drivers installed under both OSX and Win7. The Mac has the full versions of CS4 and CS5 installed. I have also installed v2.6.2 and v2.7.0 of QTR on both OSs.

I am having a whale of a time getting the ink separation files to print anywhere properly with this configuration. On the Mac side, there seems to be no install of QTRgui even with a clean install of 2.6.2 QTR. When I attempt to print the ink separation PSD file from PS CS4 with no color management in calibration mode, I get a blank sheet of paper.

On the Windows side, with v2.7.0, I encounter the known gray-only image. With 2.6.2, there appears to be no support for the 3880. I have copied across the print model and PPD files for the 3880 from the v2.7 install folders, but I then get a fatal error from QuadToPrinter:
ERROR: Fatal error: Unable to find driver named "escp2-3880"!

I can print other files to the printer in calibration mode from PS CS4, although they show up goofy and light; but I assume that that's to be expected. As to printing in calibration mode, I set PS4 for no color management, set the Quad3880 driver to calibration, select the appropriate paper feed, paper type (photo), 1440dpi, dither, and ink (PK). I have tried both the PK and installed options as far as ink is concerned with no effect. By default, an ink separation file comes up when turning on calibration mode, and I don't mess with orientation (landscape), scaling (off) or placement.

I haven't tried printing from PS CS5 as yet. It's a little goofier about no color management than CS4 is. The ink sep file that installs on the Mac side is a PSD with a QTR-Lab 8-bit color space, and I haven't messed with that.

I have also tried using the ink sep TIFF file that installs on the Win7 side. I have brought this over into the MacOS and printed it off from PS CS4. This shows up as an untagged RGB file, and again I get a blank page when I print.

I appear to be stymied at every turn. If anyone can help, I'd certainly appreciate the guidance.

I'm having my own troubles with QTR, but I can help you with printing the Ink Separation Page. You have to do this from within QTR, not PS. I have QTRgui on the desk top(PC), and just double click to open it up. Click on tools>options>Calibration Mode. When you do, the ink seperation page is seen in the preview window in QTRgui. Click print. You have to print it through QTR so that it can't be color managed at all and only prints out through certain channels.

Epson Pro 3880 won't print the Ink Separation page from QTR 2.7 or QTR 2.6.x. I spent enough time to find a workaround but given up.

Did you instal the patch for 2.7.0? If not you can get it from

http://www.quadtonerip.com/QTR2.7.0patch.zip

Download this zip file, extract both imagetoraster.exe and quadtoprinter.exe
Put both these files into:
\\Program Files\QuadToneRIP\bin
replacing the existing ones.

It worked perfectly for me.

Sorry about this.
Somehow you seemed to have run into every nuanced issue on both PC & Mac.

On the PC: 2.6.2 calib works on all printers but the 3880 since that
was just added.
The patch that rgrbrrtt posted is a fix to 2.7.0 that will work.
As it turns out you could just pretend that its a 3800 -- for calib
its identical.

On the Mac: OSX/CS4 CS5 have made it difficult to do No Color Management.
The workaround is to print with Photoshop Manages Color and select a Print
Profile identical to the one in the file. If the file has no profile
then select the Working
Space -- Working Gray if its a grayscale file, Working RGB if its an
RGB file like the inkseparation

Note: QTRgui is just on the PC not on Mac versions.

Hello Roy and others,

I've tried to follow this advice with a real image, not a calibration. However, when I print the same image with CS4/Photoshop Manages Color and the print profile the same as the file (gray gamma 2.2) and then immediately with CS2/No Color Management, the results are different! The CS4 version is somewhat darker.

Macintosh, QTR 2.6, 1400, SE inks, Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Matte, standard QTR profile. Also HPR with custom profile made by inkjetmall.

Try it ...

Sadly,
Michael
