Newbie curve help ( Epson 2200, K7, Mac OsX.3

2005-09-09 by sdoyle70

Hello, thanks for looking....
I recently purchased a refurbished 2200, the Cone Editions K7 inkset, and OTR. everything
is loaded and working, but the curves included with the install give me the wierdest
looking psudo solarized prints. Printing with QTR and no curve gives me a print that is
overall too dark, but it's something that i could work with in photoshop. Could someone
give me some suggestions on exactly what color space and profiles i should be using?
Also, is there any way to make a curve for a Mac other than entering the data manually
with Darwin? Thanks again...
Michael

I am using the identical set up, and getting beautiful prints from
this system. The suggestions you need are all in the instructions that
came with the carts from Inkjet Mall. I've used Cone's ICC system but
had to read the new directions very carefully because the new system
with QTR needs different settings.

If you have just one or two settings wrong you can easily get the
weird results you mention. Check setting twice, then check them again.
There are multiple drop down boxes in the printer dialogs and you must
look at all of the ones mentioned in the set-up guide.

Photoshop 7 and CS require different settings than CS2. Having a
printer other than the 2200 selected as the default printer can set
you up for disaster if you don't look at *each* important dialog in
the printer set-up.

I've set things wrong myself on ocassion and gotten wacko prints (some
are actually kind of interesting, though not what I was looking for).
the final line of defense is Inkjet Mall tech support.

Good luck

Hi Michael,

Since you're working with PS, it should be pretty simple to get
things printing right. You can work in any working space you want,
just as long as, right before you send the image to the printer, you
make sure to convert (not assign) the profile to gamma 2.2 if that
wasn't the working space you were in. Then, select print with
preview. Here, depending on your version of PS, you should see
something that allows you to select either, "same as source" or "no
color management." These both turn off PS's color management, VERY
IMPORTANT. Then hit print. This will bring up your driver dialog.
Make sure that your quad printer is selected. Then pull up the quad
tone rip options, select the curve you want and everything should
print as expected. If not, make sure to run a nozzle check to make
sure all your nozzles are firing. Other than that, I can't think of
any other reasons, off the top of my head, as to why you'd be getting
the "solarized" effect.

As for profile making, the easiest approach on a mac is to use
textedit to modify the descriptor files (no, there isn't a gui). Once
you get the hang of it, it's actually really easy. Make sure to have
the QTR disk image mounted, double click it to open it. Then open up
the "Profiles" & "CurveDesign" folders. In the profiles folder,
locate your printer and open a curve descriptor file, that is either
the one you want to edit or is similar to one you want to create.
Modify it, and save it under a new name. Then locate the file and
drag it into the "CurveDesign" window and drop it on the icon titled
"Drop-Quad-Profile," and your done, since the script will do the rest
for you (for a more detailed tutorial, go to the files folder for the
QTR group and open the mini tutorial, it's written for mac users).
With photoshop, I have to quit the program and restart in order for
the new curve to show up in the options. If you have more questions,
or problems, don't hesitate to ask for more help.

best regards,

Eric

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
