QTR & Grain

2011-05-11 by Andrew

I just started using QTR on the weekend and getting better with it. My digi-negs have never printed so good 'til now. One thing I have noticed is that prints are slightly grainy, especially noticeable in the mid-tones. How can I eliminate this?

I suspect most members on this list use QTR for their final prints,
rather than printing negatives for alt (or silver) processes. Just in
case you aren't aware of it, you may get more help from the alt-photo
list at
http://lists.altphotolist.org/mailman/listinfo/alt-photo-process-list
which has a few people using QTR to print negatives.

Don't know how you are profiling your inks, but you might check out Ron Reeder's website. If you are only using the black inks to make your negs then you are going to see some dithering in areas of continuous tone that may appear grainlike. Using all the inks as Ron suggests and making sure you are always laying down more than one ink eliminates this. Also, if you are not printing in 16 bit mode, you might want to try that.

Good luck,

Alan
