JP6 Crashing

JP6 Crashing

2013-05-17 by blzproductions

Hi

Just putting the feelers out to see if anyone else had had this experience, and knows anything about what might be causing it.

I'm servicing a JP6 for a client that has come to me with the following fault.

When switched on it looks OK, but no sound. Then after you've moved a few sliders or pressed a few buttons, all the LEDs go out apart from the write protect switch and the LFO2 indicator (LFO2 LED not being controlled by the CPU)
Initially I thought it was probably the battery. I checked the battery, and it seemed to be OK, but I changed it anyway.
Then I've tried to reload the Factory Banks.

When I press Tape Memory and LOAD all looks OK, but when I release LOAD... all the LEDs go out again (this could be normal... it's been a while since I serviced a JP6)
When the second pilot tone kicks in, the JP6 lit up again, but still no sound, and after a few button presses it crashes again.
On subsequent attempts to load the factory settings, once I release LOAD the lights go out, and the JP6 stays inert from that point on.

My thoughts at the moment are CPU/Eprom related.

Anyone had these symptoms? And if so... did anyone get to the bottom of it?

Any input most welcome

Bob

P.S. JP6 is running P8031 processors with eproms, rather than the older processors.

Bob,

I don't mean to offend you but your assessment of the problem and troubleshooting sequence is completely worthless if you want somebody to help you fix it. I really don't like saying this but please leave it alone if you don't know what you are doing. There are several pitfalls in the Jupiter-6/MKS-80 that even experienced techs fall into; most notably trace damage when replacing IC's.

I work out of several shops in the Chicagoland area and would be happy to fix it for you. I've been working on the Classic Roland synth line and others for about a decade.

Hi Mike

I myself am an audio tech with 17 years experience of repairing music
gear, working for many high profile artists and studios in the UK.

I am merely asking if anyone has had similar symptoms, and if so did
they get to the bottom of it.
I am not asking if anyone can fix it.
I find as a tech that pooling information speeds up the fault finding
process considerably. Surely part of the purpose of this forum is to
share information?

The synth (According to my client) was working one day, and then when
turned on on another day... not working. I have changed the battery as
it's a common cause of problems in many synths, and have tried to reload
the factory banks in an attempt to clean out any corrupt info in the
memory that may be causing this behaviour. That is all.

have you checked the ad / input slider circuits?

maybe there's a short in a slider that is hanging the machine.

will these boot without the input boards attached?

Hi Nick

I wouldn't have thought that would be the cause as it was working fine
and then wasn't. It was on an A frame the whole time and hadn't been moved.
That said... never trust a client who says they've not done anything to
cause it. ;-)
I'll give the boards another once over when I've got it back up on the
bench.

Thanks for the input

Much appreciated

ha, everyone always says the same thing. ' i don't know what happened it just stopped working! '

forgot to mention:

dropped down stairs

blown up by an IED
fell in a pool full of Bacardi
freak skiing accident

Re: [Roland_Jupiters] JP6 Crashing

2013-05-17 by Bob Stewart

I once had an engineer explain that he had no idea why the desk was generating a full scale feedback signal... Only to come back to me sheepishly after an hour or so and say "well, I did spill half a pint of Guinness over a small group of channels, but they seemed ok at the time, so I'm sure it wasn't that.
I then explained how conductive Guinness gets when it dries out!

Hi Nick

I wouldn't have thought that would be the cause as it was working fine and then wasn't. It was on an A frame the whole time and hadn't been moved.
That said... never trust a client who says they've not done anything to cause it. ;-)
I'll give the boards another once over when I've got it back up on the bench.

Thanks for the input

Much appreciated

Bob

thanks for the tip.

Hi Mike

I myself am an audio tech with 17 years experience of repairing music gear, working for many high profile artists and studios in the UK.

I am merely asking if anyone has had similar symptoms, and if so did they get to the bottom of it.
I am not asking if anyone can fix it.
I find as a tech that pooling information speeds up the fault finding process considerably. Surely part of the purpose of this forum is to share information?

The synth (According to my client) was working one day, and then when turned on on another day... not working. I have changed the battery as it9;s a common cause of problems in many synths, and have tried to reload the factory banks in an attempt to clean out any corrupt info in the memory that may be causing this behaviour. That is all.

Subject: [Roland_Jupiters] JP6 Crashing

OK...

I've been poking around some more (now that I've got a Juno 60 out of the way, and a set of fairchilds off the bench), and have established that the fault is indeed on the processor board.
I've noticed that even playing the keyboard causes the Jupiter to crash.
So... I've been looking at the schematics and looking at the common factors.
I've already ordered a replacement processor, and EPROM, but am thinking the issues could also be down to a peripheral chip failing.
Most of the logic chips are Toshiba 40H series. Does anyone know if these are 100% compatible with 74 series CMOS logic? i.e. The only current equivalent for the TC40H373P, is the 74HC373. I know they're pin and function compatible, but are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of?

Any info most appreciated

Re: [Roland_Jupiters] Re: JP6 Crashing

2013-05-31 by Mike Borish

I understand you have good intentions, but you are going to trash it if you don't know what you are doing. I'm not trying to be an arrogant jerk here. Shotgun chip replacement almost never works and there is a very high likelihood that you will damage the connections. Like I said before, the Jup6 has absolutely terrible solder pads and traces. Study a simpler logic circuit first and work your way up to it or leave it alone.

Re: [Roland_Jupiters] JP6 Crashing

Mike

I do know what I'm doing. I've been doing this kind of thing for 16 years.
I have been going through the logic with a probe, and looking at what's what.
I'm not just changing random chips.

Re: JP6 Crashing.... Fixed

2013-07-10 by blzproductions

Just a quick update.

I installed a new processor into the CPU board, and the JP6 is no longer crashing.
Processor removal was quite easy compared to some I've had to remove in the past.
Tip for anyone else having to do this...
Cut all the legs on the chip so the body falls away and leaves just the legs.
Then using a smallish tipped soldering iron, heat each leg and then use tweezers/fine nosed pliers to extract the leg from the component side. DO NOT HEAT THE PAD, PLACE THE IRON ON THE LEG.
Once all legs are removed, turn the board over onto it's back and clear the holes.

Now I've just got to get the factory presets reloaded... could be interesting :-s
