Actually I just repaired a module board that IC13A was blown up/cracked
and was just wondering
if I happened not to fix it, if I could defeat a board. Turns out (this
is a pre-DCB JP-8) that
I figured out how to turn on self-test 1 and watch the LEDS (D1-D8) to
verify the voices. (I ordered the service manual from Roland, but it
hasn't arrived yet).  

Question though, in testing that my repair was successful, I found
another voice with a VCO
not sounding.  This is happening when the self-test LED D8 is lit. 
Could you tell me which
module board and vco this equates to?  

I traded a TR-909 for this instrument over the weekend.

I have seen alot of crazyness when accessing presets and patch presets,
such as it going into
retune, the patch display flashing dashs (amoung other things), all
patch number and patch
preset LEDS coming on, etc.

Fixing the blown module I visually found has reduced the occurance of
this, but it looks like
I have 1 more bad vco to find, and hopefully, I won't have any other
problems. :-(

I still feel it was worth the trade, Awesome instrument.

Hi Doc,

I've got a pre-DCB JP8 myself! And man, am I proud to be the owner. It is by
far the most used instrument in my studio, and that while I do a lot of
things by sequencing through MIDI...

That should be board D, which holds VCO 7 and 8. D8 might tell you it is the
eight voice. You can also test this by playing the keyboard up and down for
eight notes. With the right sequence, the same osc. should always sound with
the same key...

Only problem is, it might be the processor as well. It doesn't always have
to be the VCO board. If it appears to be the VCO board after all, be
prepared to order custom ICs from Roland! I had a terrible time trying to
get my hands on the VCA's, but in the end I managed. My JP8 is now 100%
functional again.

I don't know this problem, but it doesn't sound good...

Hi Allen,

It took a while (man, so busy!) but I checked the placement of the boards:

upper two:	CD		AB
lower two:	GH		EF

A, B, C, etc...correspond with the oscs (voices) of which you have (guess
what...!?) eight available in normal operation. If either the seventh or the
eighth voice is dead, you'll need to get in with a scope to find out which
one is the dead one. At least, that was the only way for me to find out
which (E of F) was broken on mine...

Be adviced that there are quite a lot of custom ICs used, even for the oscs.
If you find one of them broken, try calling Roland (all around the world)
for a replacement. The machine is worth it.

BTW,
Did you get the service manuel yet?
