Subject: [AH] Short MKS-80 / MPG-80 Questions

hi,

I got the combo and gave it to my friend so he could work on some tracks. I
didn't have the manual and now he wants me to find the answers to some
questions.

1. How do you switch between Poly and Omni modes?
2. How do you turn local OFF?

Both either on the programmer, sound module or both. Please post to AH so I
don't get multiple replies, and anyone I didn't respond to last week, trust
me I will get back to you. I've had a lot of emails on my various posts.

Thanks a lot,

Shawn Cleary

You can do this only with the common MIDI mode messages. No way on the
MKS-80 or MPG-80.

>2. How do you turn local OFF?

I think you mean the usual MIDI local off, but on a *keyless* synth expander

... ???

I don't see why you would ever have to change anything that way -- the
Assign Mode of each patch can be changed with either the MPG-80 or the
MKS-80 front panel.

In mode III the MKS-80 echoes all incoming data on it's MIDI out. To
prevent this, set it to either I or II using the switch labeled "MIDI
FUNCTION".

Mode I -- Notes with velocity, Sustain pedal, Active Sensing,
            and Mode Message.

Mode II -- all of Mode I, plus Pitch Bend, Bender Sensitivity, Volume,
Mod Wheel, After Touch, Tune Request, and Program Change.

Mode III -- same as mode II, except it will send and receive SysEx,
only receive Program Change and will not send it when you
change patches, and send out all messages received
            from MIDI in.

All of this is explained in the manual.

Poly and Omni means the MIDI modes, eg. Poly to receive on a specific
channel, Onmi to receive on all channels. You can't change this on the panel

or the MPG-80, only with MIDI messages (so says the manual and I also found
no other way to do this).

This could be one solution. The classic local off means a disconnection
between the keyboard and the voice engines. The MKS-80 has no keyboard, so
the guy may ask for a mode in which panel changes will be sent to MIDI
without affecting the current patch. This cannot be done with the MKS-80
with or w/o the MPG-80.

Yes, and I still cannot see why someone would want to set it to receive on
all MIDI channels. Then again, I can't see why you sent me four of these
messages -- I wasn't the one asking the question.

Yes, and it should be obvious to anyone who has an MKS-80 that it does not
have a keyboard. So rather than talking down to someone simply for asking
a polite question, it's much more helpful to tell them something they might
not already know.

While that seems very unlikely, sometimes you have to make basic
assumptions as to what trouble a person is most likely having in order to
help them.
