The fact that the Serge comes in panels and is $$$ kinda makes some
buyer's brains run around and around like a a mouse on a wheel. I know
I fretted over it too. All you can do is be careful. You never really
know which modules you'll be using a lot of, and there's always one or
two that you use less often. But all my stuff gets used at least SOME
of the time, so nothing is wasted. If you don't use a particular module
it sometimes means you haven't spent enough time with it.
The shop panels are very well thought out. If you don't have a tech
background and understand the module functions clearly they're well
worth considering.
This kinda leads me into another point, what with all the mail talk of
patching examples, sound files and etc. There's really no substitute
for spending time and playing with it, trying things. You really have
to have a patient experimenter's mindset with this stuff. I avoided
patch diagrams in EGRES for a reason - to avoid dependence on patch
diagrams. Andre Stordeur's Analog Cottage (still in existence, the link
is on EGRES) has many pages of 'weird patch of the month'.
