I thought I would chime in here as I too have gone through the configure-buy-wait-play-dissapoint by my choice-sell routine that many of us on the list have. I finally have a small (2) panel system that literally took me months to design and I STILL made a few "mistakes" and even after over 10 years with Serge. That said hare are a few of my thoughts on say a (2-3) panel system excluding a TKB etc...
- At least (1) NTO but otherwise PCO's
- At least (1) Random Source (over the Noise, no comparison IMHO)
- At least (1) Divide by N
- At least (1) Active Processor
- At least (1) Cross Fader
- At least (1) Ring Modulator
- Dual Channel Mixer for output mix over UAP (on a small system, again IMHO)
- At least (1) Wave Multiplier (over Triple Waveshaper which does some nice things but not as "radical" IMHO)
- At least (1) Smooth & Stepped (must have a Random Source /Noise somewhere)
- At least (1) VCFQ, possibly (2), w/ Variable Slope as an option if you like softer more subtle sounds
- At least (1) Dual Transient Generators modded: one side w/ (3) position Rise/Fall/Both switch, other side w/ a black "IN" jack (90% of a DUSG)
- At least (1) ADSR
- (1) Preamp/Detector (nice for inputting external sources and deriving dynamic CV's from audio signals both internal and external)

Pulse Divider
3 in CV Mix/ Processor or Dual Processor
Dual Universal Slope Generator (again, modded Dual Trans gets you 90% there w/ less space)
Analog Shift Register
(1) Quantizer (if you like tonal sounds)
8x2 Sequencer (nice for very small systems) or a (N) Stage Sequencer Programmer
Dual Random Generator (I have one w/ white noise, pink noise and S/H source outputs)
Boolean Logic

Dual Phaser (VCFQ also does nice phasing in Notch mode)
Resonant EQ (nice sound but "static")

I always looked for the most density I could get in the least amount of space and did some trade offs based on that. The other thing to keep in mind is placement on the panels. The standard OSC->Filter->VCA is not always best. Last but not least LOTS of patch cords!
