DSG burst gen fun

2005-01-31 by John P

Has this come up before? I checked the messages over but didn't see any
matches...
I've been eyeing Cynthia's catalog, thinking it would be neat to have
some of her stuff in my system.
In particular, the burst generator looked pretty cool.
I've thought about it in my head, how to do something like that on my Serge.
I thought, modify a DSG, add a BLOG and a Schmitt Trigger...

I spoke with Rex the other day and he tossed in some thoughts of his
own. I know: "shocking"!
Turns out 95% of the functionality I wanted could be done VERY simply:

Ingredients: one DSG and one comparator. Since I use both of the slope
generators in the DSG I refer to them as DSG 1 and DSG 2.

Patching:

DSG 1 - send GATE to comparator (+) input. Comparator output goes to
TRIGGER input of DSG 1.
DSG 2 - send GATE to comparator (-) input.

Settings:
Set Compartor knob to -5v offset ... fully counterclockwise.

Use:

Send a TRIGGER to DSG 2. The duration of DSG 2's cycle will cause DSG 1
to cycle a number of times. The number depends on the rates of both DSG
1 and 2. For example, if DSG 1 is set up to 1 cycle/second, and DSG 2
is on for 2 seconds, you'll get 2 cycles out of DSG 1. Set DSG 1 to run
much faster, and you can get hundreds of cycles.

Variations:
Since the DSG's are voltage controlled, feeding a CV to DSG 2 gives you
a voltage-variable number of cycles.
Sending the CV to DSG 1 changes the speed of the cycles. Speeding up
the cycles without simultaneously changing the DSG 2 timing will
increase the number of cycles... so if you want both to happen together,
try the 1 v/oct inputs and some very careful fiddling. I don't know if
you can guarantee the cycle count will stay the same if you do this....

Applications:

Do you have a five-note sequence that you'd like to run thru just once,
every time you hit a key? Set DSG 1 and 2 above so DSG 1 cycles five
times at the rate you want. Use the trigger present at DSG 1 or
Comparator Out to clock your sequencer. Using the the DSG 1 GATE output
will be inverted so it may or may not be to your liking. Oh, and make
sure your sequencer's patched up so it resets after 5 steps.

Likewise, you can use DSG 1 OUT to warble a filter or oscillator a fixed
number of times, or create an envelope with a VCA to play a number of
'sounds'.

have fun gang....
