hiall,
I'd love some of youz all'z advice.
I'm changing my studios quite a bit (I have piles of keyboards and effects). I'm trying to
make the system smaller, with some hope for portability and gigging. The design theme is
a DIGITAL array, a CONTROLLER array, and a SYNTH array. My sub-goals are silent,
unusual, and interactive.
To that end I've created a portable SILENT case (made it myself, used peltier solid state
cooling to pump heat out of damped enclosure -- inaudable) that holds my digital wares.
DIGITAL - Silent case ( MUSE RECEPTOR + MAC + PC + KYMA + FOCUSRITE CHANNEL + I/
O )
CONTROLLER - ( Continuum Fingerboard, Lemur, Motormix, Fatar, Wacom )
SYNTH - ( MODCAN or SERGE or Buchla 200e + Alesis Andromeda + Theremin )
I have the Digital, and Controller all set up (well, I'm on the Buchla waiting list for the
Marimba Lumina), and now am am considering three modulars:
Modcan - it sounds the best to me so far, but it's more traditional
Serge - it sounds as good as modcan, and is more off the beaten path, which is good
Buchla 200e - I NEED TO HEAR IT - I like it for I like Buchla, and it is very pretty. But I need
to hear it. It is amazing that I can't find any audio files of it.
I've priced out a Modcan, but the Serge seems to be confusing in that after several weeks
of reading, I'm not too sure about what a good starter system is, and if I should buy new
(can I?) or used on this list. I'm more inclined to buy new.
So my questions are:
1) Is it possible to get new Serge panels? I see module pricing on serge-fan, but what
about a system-panel pricing concept?
2) Suppose my budget was $10kUSD and then $20kUSD, what would be recommended
configurations. I expect to pipe in sounds generated in the DIGITAL section, and do a lot
of performance control real time. I'm not so into analog step sequencers, and would
probably use a MIDI-CV and a CV-MIDI converter.
3) What would the delay be?
4) How reliable are the old panels? I seriously am not interested in doing maintenance
myself.
5) Anyone know what kind of stand Ed Egan has for his Serge system? That is so hella cool.
It's like from 'forbidden planet'.
6) Are serge systems mountable in the portable suitcases like in the old pictures I've seen?
I assume the power supply is external in that case?
7) Any experiences with ModCan? They are almost next-door to where I live. I really like
the system, but it seems quite traditional, and I'm liking the serge routing concepts more.
(from a reading perspective anyway).
8) Anyone have any audio samples of the Buchla 200e? It's almost like there is some sort
of non-disclosure about putting sounds online.
9) Anything else I should know about Serge's? (I just ordered every Serge touched CD from
CDBABY BTW -- so no doubt I'm buying music made by someone in this forum).
I'd really appreciate your help here.
Cheers,
Paul Sop
