I have 4 panels of Serge that are complemented by a couple of dozen
Modcan/Cyndustries modules.
I really, really like the Serge stuff, but the panel format bums me
out. What happens when you want to add a VCA or an envelope generator?
The Mod/Cyn stuff is great for this.
I have also found that I prefer the Modcan filters over the Serge, and
much of the audio processing stuff in general. And I agree with Les,
the Mod/Cyn catalogue is extremely deep now.
My system has undergone a lot of changes... at one point I had 11 Serge
panels! As it stands now, I have Serge for oscillators, slope
generators, sequencing (TKB) and CV generation/processing. I have
Modcan for filtering and audio processing/amplification.
This covers the strengths of both for me. The only Serge module I miss
is the Resonant EQ.
But there's no reason you can't have both... they work very nicely
together.
And, as far as reliability goes, I have found the Serge stuff to be
pretty well built and reliable. I also think it's really expensive when
new, but often comes up used at relatively good deals, so I would buy
used in a heartbeat if the module complement suited my needs.
Good luck!
