I think I've ruled out the Buchla 200e (thanks for sending me the mp3 Steve M.!!) for now
based on this logic:
- The two sound samples I've heard so far sound kind of intellectual and academic and
not too musical. Maybe more sound samples would sway me. I played everything on lots of
systems, and so far haven't heard much but bleeps and bloops. I really listened into those
bleeps and bloops and got a feel for the timber of the system, and it seems somewhat
constrained from the 2 minutes of sound I have on it. No one deals with Buchla that I know
in Canada, so unless I go to Big City Audio in California, I can't get hands-on.
- I really started to wonder when I heard the samples. It sounded very precise (scientific).
I'm kind of wondering if there is some sort of sonic effect from 'digital/analog' hybrid
discussion on the Buchla site - because the sounds don't seem to make my soul move. I
have I've played with a System 200 before for a few days and had a blast, but the 200e
ain't doin it for me. I hope I'm wrong about the machine, for it's very sexy looking.
- The module range is interesting, but limited. For instance, I wouldn't get the source of
uncertainty since I think a PC with the Kenton Pro-2000 MkII MIDI -> CV and a spot of
code on a PC would do wonders more. I wouldn't treat the 200e as a closed system, so
'patch storage' is a 'nice to have', but not 'need to have'. The density of the modules is
good. Maybe I'll get a few of the unique pieices in a box one day.

From all the posts on the forum, and the private emails (thanks a bunch!) here's where I'm
at:
I like all the CV manipulators on the Serge line -- it seems great for control and induction
of nontraditional timber changes. I've checked out the waveforms of various oscillators
(some included on the Kyma CD) and like their harmonics, etc...
I like the audio munching of Modcan and Cynthia (lots of great mp3's I've heard). I've
heard the most musical music on the modcans.
Some good folks have suggested 'soup kitchen' modules for audio munching, but I have to
hear them or try them to see how they compare with the modcan stuff. I am inclined to get
the CV stuff in Serge though.
As for others, I checked out Wiard (too spensif), blacet (priced right, but kinda farty),
doepfer (cheap), analog systems (nothing grabbed me), club of the knobs (cheap and
design ripoffs), PIAA (kinda cute - like these guys), CMS (stupid expensive and no
examples). I'm looking forward to the Moog 1s analog delay, and I do love the Metasonix
and Sherman products (now there's a filter).
Am I mad? Misinformed? Crack baby? On the trolley?
