as being German, I'll take Lufthansa as an example for carry-on
baggage restrictions, and do all this in metric measurements – please
forgive me.
Carry-on baggage is restricted to 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
A Serge panel is roughly 43.3 (without the rack ears) x 13.6 (11.5
box depth plus 2.1 for the knobs) x 17.8 cm.
So you can carry a 2 panel system with you in the plane's cabin.
If you know an experienced metal worker who can build special boxes
for the panels, you can reduce the overall depth for each panel by
roughly 1.5 cm per panel (as you might want to stick to the
recommended 2.5 cm for air circulation behind the circuit boards).
This would allow you to bring 3 panels (with one panel's front facing
the back of the next panel) in a box into the cabin.
Just looked it up – same carry-on limits apply for British Airways.
I don't have a weighing machine here, so I don't know how light a
Serge panel with its box is, but keep in mind to watch the weight
limits for carry-on luggage also. Depending on class you fly with BA,
it's 6 or 9 kg, Lufthansa limit is 8 kg.
The other issue to keep in mind is that you still have to carry the
power supply, which is a bit oversize. If you also want to take this
as carry-on luggage, you might find yourself limited to taking 2
panels with you, perhaps with a rebuilt encasing for the power supply.
And be prepared to answer some curious questions from the security
personnel at the airport…
