I have to chime in here. I have owned a Fenix, and I sold it. I
bought mine in the original run, and sold it several years later for a
little less than $4000. The fact that I sold the Fenix and not my
Serge gear does say something. Honestly, I don't think the Fenix is
comparable to Serge gear. The filters were kind of vanilla in my
opinion. There were a few cool features (digital noise, and VC over
sync on the first oscillator), but the versatility of the Serge (and
the ability to use modules for multiple purposes) absolutely trumps
the Fenix. A Fenix is more like 2 Serge panels. I love Synton gear,
and the Fenix was extremely compact for what it was. Bert and Marc
are great guys...and my Synton SPX-216 STILL gets used. Is a Fenix
worth over $4000? 5000? Who knows...to a collector probably. A
musician needs to get their head checked if they are going to pay that
much for such an instrument (unless they are a collector as well).
Damn, I sound like I am slamming the gear. It really is a great
synth, a rare synth, but I would NEVER pay over $4k for one.
