spoke with Rex this morning

2001-03-28 by Tobe Schultz

I just got a FutureRetro Mobius to control my Animal panel (yes, I'm fully
aware that it's a slightly silly thing to do -- "I CAN MAKE MY SERGE SOUND
JUST LIKE A TB-303!!!!!" as it were -- but I'm quite fond of the FR
interface, and once I can afford a TKB I'll move the Mobius to control my
SH-101 or Mini or other monos.) Anyway, I had some grounding issues that
Rex was able to help me troubleshoot.

I brought up the subject of this group, and Rex asked me to extend his
greetings etc. to all of you, and he surprised me by saying that he intends
to join and participate on this list!

He stated that he has to settle in a bit more in his new digs in WI first,
the exact quote was something like "(getting his) butt well seated before
joining the throng."

God, I love that man. :)

its not silly at all. control is control. lately i've been obsessed with playing my serge with "standard"
controllers: i bought a synthesizers.com keyboard and an analogue systems joystick so i could play
the serge like a somewhat "normalized" synth, which i have done very little of since owning the system.
the synths.com keyboard has two channel, split keyboard operation, which is nice, and the joystick is
x/y enabled. its been relevatory to play 12tet style with pitchbend and filter effects (or what have you) available with the
left hand. of course, i could do this before via a midi-cv controller, but it just wasn't the same. i had
previously considered this type of patching to be too mundane, and its liberating to be out of that phase.

i run the keyboard's 1/4" outs into my serge 8 channel 1/8"/banana out interface which solves
any grounding issues. only one cable needs to go thru the module to establish grounding with the
machines.

rex called me today too....it'll be....uh...interesting to have him on the list.

haha! he mentioned that he was busy putting little things into drawers "but not that type of drawers".....

a real character.

Re: mobius

2001-03-28 by C. Whitten

You read my mind. I just discovered the existence of the Mobius recently and
immediately thought it would make a great controller for the Serge. Why
not!!!
I have a TKB (which I consider to be one of the greatest sequencers ever)
but I thought it would be interesting to hear sequences with more spaces,
glides and accents in a Serge context. (Of course with 4 TKB rows you can
pretty much do everything the Mobius can do, but I'm sure it will be a
different experience).
If only there were more cv outputs on the Mobius. I can't wait to stick the
'accent' somewhere it isn't supposed to go.
Why would you necessarily make it sound like a TKB? Surely it's just another
controller option.
How did Rex solve your grounding issues?
That's the one thing that concerns me when proposing to integrate non banana
gear.
