Oops! This is actually the entire Serge 1982 catalog. I'll update it soon
in PDF format to save space.

Hi All
I know space is tight on the files section but I just HAD to upload one more
wav.file. Its my fave Serge speech patch. Just a bit of fun but does show
the incredible ability of the Serge to make just about any sound possible.
I'm gonna make a note of the patch and post it in a sec'.
To the moderator: If everyone's heard my other files feel free to take em
down whenever to give others some space to upload stuff. Can't wait for
those WAD ASR examples!
Any chance of getting some more space for uploads???

Hello
Does anybody know what are the scaling processor and buffer modules ?
2001-06-12 by ART Records
Here goes:
NTO: Sawtooth Output into VCFQ Input (Full Gain)
NTO FREQUENCY at 10 o'clock
DSG1: BIPOLAR OUTPUT to VCF INPUT of NTO (CV at full CW position)
DSG1 SETTINGS: RISE (11 o'clock) FALL (10 o'clock)
DSG2: Self-triggering (GATE OUT to TRIG IN)
DSG2 GATE OUT also going to DSG1 TRIG IN
DSG2 BIPOLAR OUT to VCF of VCFQ (CV amount at 11 o'clock)
DSG2 OUTPUT to DSG1 VC INPUT (DSG1 VC Amount set to full CW - toggle set to
RISE)
DSG2 SETTINGS: RISE & FALL both fully CW.
VCFQ BANDPASS OUTPUT to UAP VCA1 (GAIN past 12 o'clock no AM or VC
needed)...
again if anyone can follow this and would care to explain in technical terms
what is happening pls do so!
thx
Kirk
PS. John - 8 Quad OSC!! Not enough??!!! LOL!
2001-06-12 by Bob Roesler
The Scaling Processor has three sections:
1) one input with inverting scale control
one input with unity gain
2) one input with inverting scale control
one input with unity gain
3) two inputs with inverting scale control
one input with unity gain
=/- 5 volt offset control
and... one independent +5 volt reference output
the subsections are configured to be able to cascade into one another so
that you have positive/negative scale control over 4 inputs w/ one output,
or the may be used as three independent sections.
i hope this is of some help.

I haven't checked out the weird disco sounds yet.
Any more space?
I was thinking of uploading a short NTO/Metasonix combo file.

I've uploaded the Metasonix MP3.
I used the last available space to do it.
May I make a suggestion (in my politest voice) that some of the sound files
that have virtually no Serge content be removed.....unless we can get some
more space.
My MP3 is an audio track from a piece I was working on. I can't remember the
specifics but I do remember that I was using the variable output of an NTO
into the Hellfire module. I used a PCO in LFO mode to sweep the variable
output of the oscillator and the Hellfire. I spent a while making very fine
adjustments to the Hellfire until the distorted harmonics sat in tune with
the track. There was an extended range VCF in there too.

done. i have removed chris macdonald's non serge frequency shifter demos
(he's not on the list anymore, in any event), so we've
got a few more megs available for the great stuff thats being uploaded.
keep it up!

From the files section of the list, I keep hearing strange effects sounds .
These are fine but I was wondering if Serges can produce musical lead sounds
like moog leads and similar stuff.
Thanks

Its fun for me!
I play piano and Rhodes , and I want a synthesizer that can pitch bend and
do vibrato and stuff... with the ability for highly complex sounds both
weird and ordinary.

> Its fun for me!

It can do all that, everybody is just ribbing you.
My 3LPF's file is a straight melodic sound.
You wouldn't necessarily buy a Serge panel to emulate a Mini-Moog though.
CW
2001-06-15 by Alexandros Papadopoulos
Thanks Sebastian ,
No , I don't want the Serge just for leads and melodic stuff , but I want to
have that option too.
I am interested in Serge because I need an analog synth which goes a bit
further than the usual. The esoteric modules of the Serge interest me more
than those of other manufacturers .
I can buy a minimoog for the other stuff , but the price of the Serge
dictates that I will have only one synth.
2001-06-15 by Alexandros Papadopoulos
Hello
Sometime ago I read from somebody in the list that he uses a Kurzweil
expression mate ribbon controller .
I don't remember who that was , and I want to ask the following question to
him or to anyone:
Do you find it possible to use a ribbon controller exclusively (no wheels or
joysticks) for pitch bends and vibrato.
I am interested in expressive violin or sax type lead soloing and I find the
wheels restrictive.
Thanks
2001-06-16 by Barry Michael
Alex,
Although the Serge can easily make the sounds you
seek, they are a lot more work on the Serge than they
are on some KB riented Analog-modeling synths. The
Serge lends itself best to sounds You Have Not Ever
Heard, rather than Sounds You have Heard Before. If
you really need or want the lead type sounds you
describe, Yuo would do better to get an Access Virus,
or Korg Z1, or something like those. Making the Serge
do these things is like painting leopard spots on a
cow. It might Look a little like leopard, but it will
never run as fast. And you will never get Milk from a
leopard. Not the kind you want to drink anyway. Don't
get me wrong, I love the Serge soooo much, But give to
Ceasar what is Moogish, and give to Serge what is
Gods'.

The files that Kirk requested a while back demonstrating the Dual Analog Shift Register and the Wilson Analog Delay are now uploaded to the files area of SMOG. There are 2 files there. A .jpg of the patch I used, and a word .doc detailing the patch. There are 3 associated audio files, but they were too large for the file sharing area. Thanks to Sebastians' help, I opened a briefcase at yahoo and uploaded the audio there. the URL is:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/dzogchen2002
The audio files are about 4.5 Mb each. They are each 35 sec. long. They are mono, 44.1Khz sample rate, 24 bit resolution, so they are like production quality. If you want to take the time to download them, you can use any editor that plays .wav files to listen to them. Preferably Wavelab or something of that calibre. Use them as you like. They were not really created as music, but to demonstrate the sounds of the modules. The word .doc and the .jpg are out there too in the briefcase. The document details how the files were created and also the patch particulars.
You will find a short disclaimer in the .doc, concerning certain misgivings some of us have about sending out patches and sounds. Nothing serious, and I think most of you have heard it before, but it's still necessary.
this is reiterative, but the URL for the SMOG file sharing space is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/

BarryM

I'm so sorry to be like this (honestly) but....
It is so boring to have disclaimers about patches and soundfiles, especially when this is 1. a Serge interested group and 2. you have to join and have a password anyway.
I think we are all intelligent enough to realise that there are thousands of permutations on any modular system let alone a Serge. Equally it is a given that any patch would not be regarded as a 'preferred' patch, patches most often sound different every time you recreate them anyway.
It's not Barry that I have a beef with as he has consistently provided a lot of useful information and insight into the Serge system. I have a problem with this side of the STS empire. IMO some of these attitudes belong in the bad old days of the 70's.
The bottom line is that with modules like the WAD running at $500 plus and panels averaging between $2,500 and $3,000, it makes sense to find out as much as possible about a modules usefulness before committing to it.
I've been around the music biz for a good few years and seen how a few true innovators go about their business. IMO everybody has to start somewhere. The Beatles started out copying the likes of Buddy Holly and Elvis. Most of the great master painters started out mimicking other artists styles.
Why shouldn't we be able to copy a modular patch, see what is going on and develop it to our own tastes. There will always be the odd 'genius' who sticks a couple of patch chords in the 'wrong' holes and starts getting amazing sounds right away. What is really wrong with us mere mortals getting a leg up?

Hi Chris,
The file section is open and files accessible by anyone. (This option
can be set by Matt only.)
Onff topic content follows..
If this should not be true for other users and files instead be
restricted like you described, this would not be the first oddity I
am recently experiencing with Yahoo services:
All of Yahoo's URL based/ only web-accessible services are messed
up.... Specified people cannot visit briefcases I have given them
access to. The JPG and WAVs that Barry uploaded I cannot download
with (browser-integrated or not) download managers (Go!zilla), nor
by "save as", nor by simple mouseclick - all I get on my harddrive is
html code, streaming (SIC) inizialization (and this is NOT a setting
of my computer), 4.5 MB large WAVs that cannot be properly read by
any program (incl. Wavelab: states "16 bit") and play back as white
noise merely. I cannot post replies on the SMOG webpages - they get
lost and I am lead to the log-in page.
All this has started when Yahoo made a few cosmetic alterations to
their services a few weeks ago. No comments from support addresses.
Does anyone have a clue WTF is wrong?

Guys, Sorry for the trouble you are having with these file downloads. The files were ready almost a week ago, but I had a hell of a time uploading them at all. Sebastian, you had warned me about timeouts and they are a fact. If you have decent connection speed, you should be able to get them down in enough time that the download page won't go south. I am going to try tonite to test it out myself. What about the .jpg and the .doc? Are you having the same problem with them, or do they come down alright? Let me know , and I'll do what I can. Only problem is if it is really a Yahoo problem there may be little that we can do - open to suggestions,

Guys, Sorry for the trouble you are having with these file downloads.
No worries mate. Just glad you posted them in the first place.
I had no trouble downloading the documents, love the Serge panel patch
diagrams BTW.
Most people I know (in the UK) are still on the old 56k modem and we're
usually paying for the phone time if not the isp as well, so the smaller
files are the only way to go for the likes of me.

- "The requested document is not accessible" when clicking on it
- corrupted/partial download
Conclusion: Yahoo is great when avoided...
Maybe a fellow Serge maniac might email me that document!?

Whatever I try to do (with Firefox) no luck at all...
- "The requested document is not accessible" when clicking on it
- corrupted/partial download
Conclusion: Yahoo is great when avoided...
Maybe a fellow Serge maniac might email me that document!?
P.S.: Anyone knows anything about Rex´s new product?
All the best to you
Frank

I went right to the files section on yahoo and was able to download it from there...for some reason the link to there doesn't work...great publication!

It downloaded OK for me.
Excellent effort. Nice graphics.

I had no trouble. My Imac only rarely experienced problems with downloading pdf's.
Incredible, it looks like "a gift from heaven"!
I mean here's a written document which puts all the badly needed information together in clear, intelligible sentences.
Thanks Ken Tkacs for putting so much work in to it and making it available here!

Yes. Thank you indeed. Wish I’d had something like
this when I was recording my cd’s . they might have turned out a little
less amateur.
