Serge faceplate vintage?

Serge faceplate vintage?

2002-05-09 by John Papiewski

Does anybody know how many variations the Serge faceplates have had, and
when they were done?

There was the original Calarts batch (with a rubber-stamped horse?).
Then they went to the first production modules with the adhesive backed
paper & mylar. When did the first aluminum panels come in? I saw a
couple panels made of dark blue plastic - with early Serge filters,
phase shifters etc behind. Was this a one-off or a short production
run?

Thanks

The very first ones were all pretty unique. Serge had designed the modules with only geometric patterns, squares for outputs, diamonds for inputs, etc. He had adhesive backed paper which was then varnished. Some people decided to use no graphics at all, providing a pretty "theft-proof" system, because a plain aluminum faceplate filled with banana jacks could only be used by the owner who knew where everything was. Cases were unique. Some people did not use cases at all --just the aluminum boxes, some made custom wood cabinets. I fitted a six panel system into a metal Haliburton suitcase,
Around 1977 Serge came up with the clear Mylar material. A few years later the adhesive metal plates were adopted, and the "Series '79" style was pretty much the standard for the next few years. The graphics were pretty messy to make, but looked good when done well, and have held up for about 20 years now. The metal adhesive was rolled around the top and bottom edge so it didn't suffer the peeling problem of the Mylar. Serge's original concept was to have a separate graphic for each module, and kits were sold that way, but when people saw a full panel graphic with all the custom modules printed on one piece, almost everyone chose to have them made that way.
I left in '83, so someone else will have to provide history on subsequent methods.

Re: Serge faceplate vintage?

2002-05-09 by benvehorn

Hi all, I'm new to the list.
I don't really know the full answer to this, but I have panels from
several eras so I'll describe the ones that I have that look
different.

1) 4 panels, appear to be from kit since the faceplates are made from
paper covered in plastic. I've been poking around in this list's
archives and file sections and cannot find any that look identical.
The photos of early paper-covered panels appear to have a module-by-
module, cut-and-paste look to them. My panels have a single sheet of
paper covering the whole face and all the graphics are hand-written;
it looks like someone just drew a picture of the faceplate on a
19"x4U piece of paper. Maybe the kit builder just decided this would
look better? He signed each panel and his name appears to be "Jim
Ewing". Do any of the old-time Sergers on the list know him? It
appears to be built very well and he has the drawing skills of an
architect. One of the panels is a TKB which, of course, has the stock
faceplate. The power supply is built into the TKB and all of the
power connectors are routed through the modules (i.e. the power wires
for panel 4 runs through panels 2 and 3), so they cannot be
separated. Self-contained, but weird in the sense that you can't just
pull one panel out.
2) 2 panels, believed to be early to mid nineties vintage. The metal
faceplates on these are gold, not silver. The chassis for these are
much shallower than the newer ones; about half as deep. Definitely
modernish, but no STS stamps on lower-left of faceplate. Does anyone
else have panels with gold faceplates? One of the panels has banana
jacks down the sides, outside the modules. Not sure what they are for
(obviously not mults!) and I'm afraid I might blow something up if I
throw them in a signal path...I'm pretty sure the guy from which I
bought them got them firsthand from Rex, so I should probably ask him
sometime.

I have some other panels that look mainly similar but have different
depth chassis, etc. The 2 main things that I have noticed with these
are that:
---The new panels I bought from Rex in 2000 have *much* deeper
chassis than all the others.
---The only ones I have with STS logos on the lower left of the
faceplate are these 2. All others (as recent as 96) have no STS logos.

Hope this wasn't too long-winded. I'm interested in hearing if
anybody knows anything about this "Jim Ewing" guy, as he obviously
spent a lot of time just drawing up the faceplates for these panels.
Thanks.

My Serge panel built in 1994 by STS is gold colored. I acquired it
used.

Are the new rack mount boxes too deep to put in an SKB popup case?

faceplate vintage? (black)

2002-05-09 by denshiblocks

in response to the question about how many faceplate styles there
are...
i know peter grenaders system that he graciously donated to CalArts has
a reverse legend with black panels and silver graphics. i think this
may have been custom, as i have found no other references to black
panels.

I think there is at least one other system.

Nope, not too deep for SKB, just deeper than all of my other
panels.

I didn't know that Pete had a black panel system and also donated it to CalArts. What a coincidence.
If you look at the files section on this conference, you'll see ample information about that black panel system at CalArts.

my mistake! i get confused easily. no offense intended to darrel or
peter. unfortunatly i still havent been able to make it to valencia to
see the system face to face. ive used moog 900 systems before and am
looking forward to getting a fresh approach to modular synthesis.
again, im terribly sorry about the mix up, ill keep quiet from now on
