It's possible that Michael paid for it, but I always assumed it was Kevin's. That was before I managed the business. He assembled it, and I think Chas Smith did the welding for the custom frame. It was built during the time that the factory worked out of the Hollywood loft.
Speaking of which, if you ever see a bad old movie called the Mod Squad, a movie made after the TV series, there's a scene where they climb up some stairs in the back of a three story brick building to enter an apartment. Those exterior shots were the rear of the Serge shop. The interiors in the movie were shot somewhere else.

seems to be lots of unverifiable information on this subject. When i last
talked to Kevin i asked him about the PU disk and i came away with the
impression that the "MightySerge" was always Kevins. He built it up during
the years that he worked for Serge. He was teaching class with it where MS
was a student. The pictures of MS with the Serge is actually Kevins machine
and he still has it.....at 15 panels.....and no.... he doesn't read the list.
Darrell might have better insights into this but this is what i got from my
conversations with Kevin.

If somebody has them, I'll add them to the EGRES gallery. I've taken over
hosting of EGRES from John, though I let John approve content additions,
since it was his baby to start with.

Well if there's a good picture out there that's not already in the SMOG

I am aware that theres' a backlog of updating to do... lots of projects going

HMMMMM..... To be honest, the instrument in these pics does not look
like the mighty I saw on the Keyboard mag article. First of all, in
the KB Mighty the curved rows of panels were not parallel to each
other, but slightly at an angle, so they would "wrap" around the
player. Second, the top panels had what seemed to be a silkscreening
of the painting of a nude man floating (or is he kicking a soccer
ball? Not clear). Anyway, I'll keep looking through my old magazine
collection. If I find it, I'll let you guys know.

You can't tell the difference between a nude man and one kicking a soccer

Re: mighty serge

2002-05-16 by Darrel Johansen

Michael Stearn's system is not Kevin Braheny's. Kevin's was meant to be used in a nearly horizontal position, with its three dimensional curved case allowing easy reach of all panels. Stearn's is more traditional. Possibly the same number of panels, but in a case that extends mostly vertically. I can't completely remember what kind of faceplates Kevin had, but it seemed that they were custom, possibly black single-piece anodized aluminum. It was, shall I say, far out?

Dude, it's a crappy picture, man!! It's probably a pseudobaroque
painting of a nude guy, who seems to be kicking a ball a la' Pele.
Just wait 'till I find it.

How many articles have their been in keyboard magazine?
The SMOG file from 1996 Keyboard is the only (proper) article I've ever been
aware of. I got a copy from Rex a few years ago and it matches exactly the
SMOG file.
The system does 'wrap around'. It's basically 20 panels in a flightcase
arrangement. Presumably the two wings close inwards.
On a personal note (and I suspect controversial) I always thought it was a
bit excessive.

Kevin customized the hell out of his system. He once told me that there were
so many holes punched into his faceplates that they were beginning to lose
their tensil (sp?) strength. Serge himself was not into "customizing" his
moduals and took a dim view of what Kevin was doing. After building up his 15
panel system Kevin said that the man looked at it and said, " nice looking
system, what's with all the f**king mods?"
LMAO!!!!

mr. duval......... son't believe I've ever been called "mr." before.... it's
so formal huh??
I couldn't get it together for the CD... or rather, about a month before
cutoff date for subs i posted to Blake.... er.... mr. wilson if there was
still time left to send something in. It wasn't untill later that i found out
that we were having trouble with the e-mail server and i guess my query never
got out..... so, i lost out. No big deal i guess. I don't have the background
that most people here seem to have and my stuff would probably sound pretty
pedestrian. However that hasn't stopped Mike at Hypnos records from
scheduleing my CD for release towards the end of this year. We are going to
try and make it a DVD.
On the "Dweller" CD, the first few cuts have a little Serge on them but
it's not obviouse. The next Dweller CD may be out at the end of summer. It's
a live recording and there is a little more of my portable (??? haha) system
on it.
Kind regards

Doesn't sound like Serge to me, although I don't wish to be argumentative. It doesn't work in his french accent, and I rarely heard him be critical of anyone's system. He encouraged experimentation. A lot of the mods got to be pretty standard in the 80s. DSGs packed into the 2" panel of a DTG, NTOs squeezed into a PCO space, QUANs stuffed into a TKB. Kevin's panels were pretty fragile as he did even more than these mods, pretty much drilling an entire new row between the 1" pre-punched holes of the standard panels. If someone posts a link to the picture, I'd be glad to verify that it is indeed the "mighty serge" (aka "death star").

indeed! i was basing my speculation on a conversation i had with rex at STS a few years ago. i asked about stearns rig, and rex called over to kevin asking about it. i *thought* the discussion entailed something to the effect that michael had sold his to kevin....so i assumed it was the same unit.

obviously not, tho! kevin's is quite the machine!

but the question remains: who's got michael's and kevin's rigs?
