jack and panel comingling conundrums
2002-06-15 by m. blake wilson
first of all, kudos to blacet and doug at enport for taking orders and
shipping right away: i ordered from both companies monday, received from
blacet on wednesday, and from enport yesterday. fast service.
(if you missed my last post, i'm straying from the serge camp in a quest
to add on some features to my system that i've wanted/needed for a
while. i now have the joystick and freq to voltage module from analogue
systems, foot pedal controller and spring reverb from doepfer, and EG
from blacet [in kit form]). here are a few obversations about whats
ahead in the area of sergifying these modules:
both AS and doepfer will easily convert to banana jack configs; i
already did the joystick and it looks great with blue jacks and harry
davies knobs. the former 1/8" holes provide a perfect fit for my johnson
bananas from mouser. the doepfer modules are a bit more involved, with
PCB mounted jacks (which practically disintergrate at the touch, btw),
but still are removed and upgraded with ease.
power supply considerations are fairly easy: i have a 15V+/- supply that
will power the blacet and i'm building a very simple step down device
with a 7812/7912 pair to give me the 12v+/- needed by AS and doepfer.
all modules are having their stock PS jacks snipped and replaced with
molex connectors (of which there are plenty in the tool kit).
so far, easy. now the hard part: i've got a frac rac which houses the
blacet and my home brew filter easily, but the doepfer/AS don't fit
without some fairly serious adjustments on the drill press (i.e.
drilling new holes on the panels). any suggestions here? peter
grenader, norman? aren't you guys doing the same thing?
all in all, a fun project. i have had the soldering iron out in ages.
